അടുത്ത ദിവസം രാവിലെ, കഴിഞ്ഞ രാത്രിയിലെ ആ അസ്വസ്ഥപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന ചിന്തകൾ എന്റെ മനസ്സിനെ വേട്ടയാടിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. ഞാൻ പതുക്കെ അടുക്കളയിലേക്ക് നടന്നു. അവിടെ അമ്മ പ്രഭാതഭക്ഷണം തയ്യാറാക്കുന്ന തിരക്കിലായിരുന്നു. ഏതോ പഴയ മലയാളം പ്രണയഗാനം മൂളി അങ്ങേയറ്റം സന്തോഷവതിയായാണ് അമ്മയെ കണ്ടത്.

ആ വരികളിലെ ‘ആരും കാണാതൊരു നാൾ വരും’ എന്ന ഭാഗം എത്തുമ്പോൾ അമ്മയുടെ മുഖത്ത് ഒരു പ്രത്യേക ഭാവം വിരിഞ്ഞു.
”അമ്മ ഇന്ന് നല്ല മൂഡിലാണല്ലോ… ആ വേദനയൊക്കെ എങ്ങനെയുണ്ട്?” ഞാൻ ചോദിച്ചു.
അമ്മ പെട്ടെന്ന് മറുപടി പറഞ്ഞു, “ഓ മോനേ… അതൊക്കെ മാറി. ഞാൻ അതിനുള്ള മരുന്നുകൾ കൃത്യമായി കഴിച്ചു.”
എന്തോ ഓർത്തെന്നപോലെ അമ്മയുടെ മുഖം അല്പം ചുവന്നുതുടുത്തു.
ഞാൻ പറഞ്ഞു: “നമുക്ക് വേണമെങ്കിൽ വേറെ ഏതെങ്കിലും ഡോക്ടറെ പോയി കാണാം അമ്മേ…”
അമ്മ ഉടനെ തിരുത്തി, “അയ്യോ വേണ്ട ദേവൂട്ടാ, ഈ ഡോക്ടറാണ് എനിക്ക് കംഫർട്ടബിൾ. എനിക്ക് ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ചികിത്സ തന്നെ തുടർന്നാൽ മതി…”
പ്രഭാതഭക്ഷണം വിളമ്പിക്കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ അമ്മ പറഞ്ഞു, “ഇന്ന് രാത്രി നമുക്ക് പുറത്തുനിന്നാണ് ഭക്ഷണം, വിശ്വസാർ കൂടെയുണ്ടാകും.”
അന്ന് രാത്രി, പതിവില്ലാത്ത ഒരു ഒരുക്കത്തിലായിരുന്നു അമ്മ. വിശ്വനാഥ് സാറിന്റെ വസ്ത്രത്തിന് ഇണങ്ങുന്ന രീതിയിലുള്ള വസ്ത്രധാരണമായിരുന്നു അത്.
